Paris of the Middle East

Taking a look at these photos makes it hard to imagine that such a beautiful country endured years of civil war and foreign occupation. Beirut, the “Paris of the Middle East” and capitol of Lebanon, is depicted here during its “Golden Era” (1950’s through early 1970’s) before the country fell into turmoil. Fortunately, things have improved and the country’s biggest problem today (besides housing Syrian refugees) is getting its trash taken out – literally.
